The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (SERNAPESCA) received this Sunday the delegation of the Veterinary Service of the Russian Federation, Rosselkhoznadzor, which will carry out inspections of facilities of companies that export to the Eurasian market.
The visit will last until November 21, and considers plants in the regions of Magallanes, Aysén, Los Lagos and Biobío.
In Chile, 54 processing establishments are registered to export to the EEU (Eurasian Economic Union). They are sanitary certified by SERNAPESCA, according to standards validated by the Russian Federation, which are among the strictest in the world.
So far in 2019, six plants entered the temporary restriction regime for non-conformance detection. This means that they cannot export to the Federation, as reported by the Russian health authority.
In consideration of the importance of this market for the mainly aquaculture sector, which exports salmon and mussels (choritos), negotiations were held with the health authority of the UEE. In response to the request made by Chile, the Russian Federation decided to carry out this audit to evaluate the safety control system and the situation of the establishments.
This visit includes the inspection of 11 processing establishments, cold storages and farming centers, as well as analysis laboratories. In principle, the Russian authority said that only five establishments would be inspected, but at the request of SERNAPESCA this number was increased. The Service has reiterated the need for the Russian health authority to provide options and steps for the incorporation of other establishments that remain in a pending situation with respect to the market.
The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is an economic union of states located in central and northern Asia and Eastern Europe. The Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union was signed on 29 May 2014 by the leaders of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia, and came into force on 1 January 2015. Armenia's accession treaty came into force on 2 January 2015. Kyrgyzstan's accession treaty came into effect on 6 August 2015.
During the first half of 2019, the EEU market represented 6.4% of the total Chilean fisheries and aquaculture exports. Compared with the same period last year, there is a decrease of 17.6% in global terms.
