The National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (Conapesca), in coordination with the National Service of Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (Senasica), are developing a national traceability program for shrimp farming in Mexico, with the objective of updating the production, sales and consumption process of this crustacean.

The Computerized Traceability System for Agricultural, Aquaculture and Fishery Goods (SITMA) - which includes an appendix of the shrimp farming chain - will have the function of providing updated information to the productive sector, making it a more profitable activity for producers of shrimp on farms throughout the country, and positioning it in competitive markets abroad.

The system is expected to be operational as of the first quarter of next year, once the negotiations with the aquaculture shrimp producers that will enter the system are concluded.

The general coordinator of Operation and Institutional Strategy of Conapesca, Luis Miguel Flores Campaña, explained that in the case of the consumer, SITMA will guarantee the monitoring of the product from the production unit until the moment of its consumption in restaurants, or in your home by means of an informative label, with a QR code.

“Aquaculture producers will have access to the system to obtain information about their competition, know the properties of the product and what their route was until they reached the place of purchase, among other aspects. This information will be verified by Conapesca and Senasica, responsible for updating the computer system,” he explained.

To give greater certainty of the traceability of the product at the time of its exportation, SITMA will have a direct link with the International Regional Agency for Agricultural Health (OIRSA) that, as well as within the country, will allow monitoring of the shrimp from its origin to the destination nation, with the future vision of generating labels for the Asian and European market, in the medium term.
