The survey was agreed within the framework of the II Meeting of the Argentina-Chile Binational Commission for Cooperation in Marine Scientific Research, which was held on May 27, 2019 in Santiago, Chile.
During the survey, interdisciplinary studies will be carried out in the Beagle Channel and in the southeast area of the Island of Tierra del Fuego, within a framework of bilateral collaboration between Argentine institutions (INIDEP and CADIC-CONICET) and the Center for Dynamic Research of Marine Ecosystems of High Latitudes (IDEAL) of the Universidad Austral de Chile (UACH).
Beagle Channel map
The current survey aims to study the effects of acidification and hypoxia on the “biological bomb” of carbon and on different levels of trophic plots in the Beagle Channel, with emphasis on species of ecological and / or commercial importance in the Beagle Channel.
The INIDEP ship sailed from Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, and will conduct a transect along the Beagle Channel with the purpose of identifying acidification gradients, sites with low concentrations of dissolved oxygen, studying the currents and transport of water bodies, investigating the dynamics and distribution of plankton, study the physical and chemical conditions of the water column. You will also obtain hydroacoustic records of organisms and seabed mapping using multi-beam acoustics.
