  • For Javier Garat, “better to participate actively in the scientific process that supports fisheries management than to launch apocalyptic messages that do not contribute to improving it”
  • The employer advocates before FAO to build trust between all parties, expand responsible management to places where it does not exist, and simplify and equate regulations

Rome - The president of ICFA and secretary general of the Spanish Fisheries Confederation (CEPESCA), Javier Garat, has taken advantage of his speech at the International Symposium on Fisheries Sustainability, which is being held by FAO this week in Rome, to encourage foundations and NGOs Environmentalists to work together with the fishing industry, scientists and governments in improving fisheries management worldwide, “instead of spending hundreds of millions of dollars every year to promote limitations and even ban fishing , mainly on a large scale, with the excuse of conservation ”.

After reminding “the hundreds of thousands of fishermen and fishing companies that are working hard to bring sustainable fishery products to the market”, with the aim of “feeding the world population with the healthiest animal protein, and creating wealth and employment to Throughout the entire value chain, with the least possible environmental impact, ”Garat has asked himself:“ Why can't these environmental groups spend their money on solving problems where they exist, instead of attacking well-managed fisheries in general? ?

For the secretary general of Cepesca it is necessary to build trust between all parties and grant the presumption of innocence to the fishing industry, very frustrated today due to the presumption of guilt that is blamed arbitrarily. In his opinion, it would be more positive and productive for everyone to join forces in improving the overall governance of fisheries: “invest in programs for data collection and scientific analysis so that experts can better perform their work, or new technologies to that fishing gear be more selective ”, and thus“ actively participate in the scientific process that underpins effective fisheries management, in collaboration with all stakeholders and fisheries managers ”.
