A team of researchers from the National Fisheries Institute (INAPESCA) in Patzcuaro, Michoacan, developed a genetically certified whitefish broodstock.
The specialists hope to boost the recovery of this iconic resource of the state of Michoacan.
After several years of research, experts from the INAPESCA Regional Centre for Fisheries Research (CRIP) in Patzcuaro formed a batch of certified reproducers such as Chirostoma estor.
These specimens will be kept in a laboratory to produce the offspring, reported the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) in a statement.
Besides, the authority commented that the generation of whitefish offspring will make it possible to supply much of the demand of the aquaculture sector in the region and recover population levels.
The team of researchers explained that in the CRIP of Patzcuaro there is a stock of 1,500 reproducers that received genetic certification of the Metropolitan Autonomous University (UAM).
It also has eggs, larvae, offspring and reproducers.
Experts stressed that thanks to the biotechnology developed and to the implementation of production protocols, it was possible to control the closed cycles of reproduction: reproducers, spawning, fertilization, larval status, juvenile specimens and mature adults.
And they noted that during all the development stages, fish are kept under strict food and sanitary care to prevent infection.
In addition, it was clarified that every day water quality is monitored in order to maintain concentrations of salinity, oxygen, nitrogen compounds and temperature at minimum levels.
And a thorough cleaning of the ponds is performed to prevent outbreaks of infection.
Finally, SAGARPA reported that INAPESCA is trained to provide aquaculturists with technology packages for the fattening of this species, which will enable the generation of jobs and more income in the region.
