The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) estimates that the aquaculture sector would grow 6.8 percent this year, driven by a recovery in the harvests of scallops, after crops in the Sechura Bay were significantly affected by the presence of the coastal El Niño in 2017.

"By the middle of 2018, scallop farming was just beginning to show signs of recovery. If favorable oceanographic conditions remain, it will be a good year for this product and the sector in general, which could reach a production higher than 110,000 tons in2019," PRODUCE forecasts.

An increase in demand would also have a positive impact, as well as higher production of shrimp, trout and tilapia. "The production of these last two products would increase 5 percent on average, which would allow us to continue promoting this sector," says PRODUCE.

Another factor that will influence this result, according to the ministry, are the tax facilities granted to the sector through Legislative Decree No. 1431, which reduced the Income Tax (IR) rate from 29.5 percent to 15 percent for aquaculture activity.

Meanwhile, PRODUCE foresees that exports of aquaculture products could amount to 49,000 tons. This as a result that in 2018 samples of scallops and paiche were sent to China, Japan and Hong Kong, and orders from these Asian countries are expected to finalize this year.

Last year the country's aquaculture production mounted to 103,600 tons, a figure that represents an increase of 3 percent compared to the previous year, mainly due to the higher production of trout and shrimp, and to the progressive recovery in scallop harvests.

In economic terms, the value of the aquaculture production amounted to PEN 1,090.6 million (USD 329.7 million), which means a slight increase (1 percent) compared to that of 2017.
