Shrimp in danger: The conflict between SOMU and shipowners can reach a point of no return

The salary discussions escalated in tone and violent situations have been experienced. The cameras agree not to go fishing if there is no agreement and the SOMU rejects the proposal while asking patience for some 3,000 sailors who demand a solution. The intervention of the national government is expected.

The conflict between SOMU (Sindicato de Obreros Maritimos Unidos) and freezer ship companies has reached a point that, if it continues in the same situation, there will be no return. If an agreement is not reached, the crew will have lost the 2020 season and the sailors' agreement will remain unchanged until next year. The escalation of attacks, which is materialized in a patrol car at the door of the house of the president of one of the cameras and videos against him, homophobic and decadent, worthy of a complaint to INADI, was alienating the possibilities of dialogue. On Friday, after asking the Undersecretary for Fisheries for a long time, the Minister of Agribusiness, Luis Basterra, will receive the fishing chambers. The intervention of the national government will be requested to unlock the conflict and the official will be illustrated on the losses that the strike is generating to the State, in the midst of a situation of economic and health crisis in which the entry of foreign currency is essential. For those who also need to go fishing it is for the sailors, who are beginning to demand a solution from the guild.

The business chambers CAPIP, CEPA and CAPECA are all in agreement. If an agreement is not reached in the lowering of the reference price, they will not go fishing and the crew of the freezers will run out of season in 2020. The universe of workers affected is approximately 3,000 sailors, at which must be added to the machinists, captains, stowage personnel and all the related activities that are affected.

The proposal of the business sector exceeds by 3 percent in pesos the earnings received by the tide in 2019. This, at a delicate moment in which wages in various sectors have been affected by heavy falls and the loss of thousands of jobs . To achieve this value, an increase of 100% of the basic is applied, which includes orders and francs; but also a drop in the reference value to calculate production.

The SOMU does not accept the drop in the reference value, which would go from US$$ 5.80 for L1 to US$ 3.80. Signing a downward agreement is a decision that no leader wants to make and there is a determination not to accept it. The problem is that, with the drop in the price of shrimp and poor sales, the business sector ensures that it cannot sustain these costs. With export prices below US$ 5, it becomes impossible to continue working with current values.

Lowering this value can have a major impact on future earnings for sailors. If the price increased and that value were maintained, it would deprive them of a share in the profits of the company that they achieved many years ago and that allows them to enjoy one of the best salary agreements in the country.

It is not a minor issue and many discussions may be necessary to generate a new calculation of participation in production that is fair and capable of accommodating the fluctuations of the market. That is why agreeing temporarily, leaving pending a deep discussion on the liquidation of production in the future, may be a solution.

From the data of companies that are circulating and that reflect what the employers propose to the sailors, a salary of US$ 5,000 is obtained as a result, to which the State will then apply income tax and the worker will have USD 4,415 left dollars, or 309,050 pesos, with three tides carried out in the month.

The sailors who have been without boarding for more than eight months and who are beginning to become impoverished, demand from the union a prompt resolution of the conflict. Entering more than 300,000 pesos in a house at the moment is a luxury that not many sailors can afford. On the other hand, the leaders, who continue to collect their salary as always, have room to prolong the debate. For the worker it is very complicated, because the option is to continue entering the 25 thousand pesos of the basic (USD 355)
