The National Fisheries Society (SNP) stressed that the fisheries industry in Peru has multiple actors and is developing beyond the manufacture of fishmeal and fish oil.

Thus, the industrial fleet of mackerel, jacka mackerel, anchovy, octopus and hake offers the population canned and frozen products at competitive prices. These species are strictly regulated with reproductive closures, minimum sizes and global fishing quotas. In addition, the industrial fleet is permanently supervised by satellite control mechanisms and inspections with production personnel on board the same ships and in the plants.

The fish manufacturing activity is composed of 393 plants, of which 222 are dedicated to the production of canned, frozen and cured, 52 to the production of residual flour and waste reuse, while 119 to the production of fishmeal.

For canned goods, it has 73 companies and 79 plants. In that sense, in the SNP there are nine companies that manufacture canned food and own 14 plants, which represent 40% of the national production capacity.

On the other hand, 90% of the Peruvian fishing fleet (16,405 vessels out of a total of 18,211) is small-scale and artisanal. It is also the one that has grown the most in the last 20 years, from 6,268 artisanal and smaller-scale vessels in 1995 to 16,405 in 2012, that is, 163%.

Fishmeal companies (shipowners with anchovy fishing permits) amount to 494. Of this total, the members of the National Fisheries Society (SNP) are 12 years old and have an industrial steel fleet.

79.4%, that is, 392 companies, are represented by the owners of the wooden fleet, which do not belong to the SNP. Finally, there are another 90 companies with an industrial steel fleet (18.2%), which are not part of this fishing union.

Similarly, the industrial fleet has 628 warehouses for direct human consumption, whether frozen, preserved or cured.
