Visiting the country, the president of the Xunta de Galicia, Alberto Núñez Feijóo expressed yesterday his disposition to a mutual collaboration between Argentina and Galicia to progress in fisheries management, as well as in research and control; in the formation and training of crews and in the port logistics.

"We offer collaboration on those issues where both parties can learn and take advantage, especially," he said, conveying the conviction that this mutual collaboration can bear fruit and have continuity, "for the sake of the fishing industries here, which are our fishing industries; for the sake of the workers and for the sake of a basic sector for Galicia such as the fishing industry.”

Feijóo, who visited the facilities of the Estrella Patagónica fishing company and of  Iberconsa Argentina and traveled to Rawson, to meet with the governor of the province of Chubut, Mariano Arcioni, will also hold numerous meetings with fisheries authorities of Santa Cruz and Buenos Aires, with the aim of evaluating with the provincial governments and with the Argentine Government the circumstances and the activity of the Galician fishing companies with presence in the country.

"We are going to try to make ourselves available, to thank the treatment they have with Galician companies and also to propose different possibilities and collaborations in matters of training, in terms of experience and fisheries management," he said, by way of summary.

In this line, he highlighted the interest of the Galician Executive to study how to make a better exploitation of marine resources, taking into account the activity of fleets such as China, which operate outside of 200 miles and that threaten the sustainability of the fisheries, or considering  the state of resources such as Norwegian lobster, which grew a lot in recent years.

In this regard, Feijóo advocated the creation, based on the collaboration between the States of the Southeast Atlantic area, of a Regional Fisheries Organization that allows ordering and proper management of fisheries, in the same way that already happens in many other areas.

On the economic level, he underlined the objective of evaluating and verifying that Galician companies maintain their stability and that the country's economic situation affects them as little as possible.

“For that, we will discuss with the authorities issues of interest for the viability of our companies and for the Galician fishing sector, related to the progress of the operations in the ports of Puerto Madryn and Puerto Deseado, with the possibility of obtaining advantageous agreements to the time to make investments such as fleet renewal, and with export conditions, especially regarding the agreement between the European Union and Mercosur, ” he explained.

And, on the social level, he recalled that the Xunta will always defend that the creation of quality employment should be a fundamental issue wherever Galician companies are, "although we know that they do so," he said.

Feijóo recalled that Argentina, together with Namibia, is the main State in which the Galician fishing industry develops its activity through joint ventures. Thus, in the Latin American country Galician companies have a unique socio-economic importance: they have 68 ships of their ownership and another 14 which they operate exclusively; and they generate almost 5,000 jobs, of which  almost 2,000 are aboard fishing boats.

Likewise, Galician companies in Argentina are responsible for most of this country's fishery exports to Galicia, with an average of 55,000 tons of fish and shellfish and with an average annual amount of 250 million value; "Not only not competing with Galicia but making it more competitive".

“In short, we are in Patagonia, proving in the first place that we are a fishing community, that creates jobs in Argentina and that we are interested in sustainable fishing, the management of fishery resources and also the improvement of the ports where our Galician fletes work,” he concluded.
