In April 2021, Barcelona will host the Seafood Expo Global / Seafood Processing Global, the world's largest exhibition of seafood products, a fair that had been held in Brussels (Belgium) for 28 years.

This was announced in a statement by the company Diversified Communications, organizer of this event, whose 29th edition will be held from April 27 to 29, 2021 at the Fira de Barcelona, in the Gran Via de L'Hospitalet.

In its latest edition, this expo brought together more than 29,000 buyers and suppliers of seafood products from around the world and 2,000 exhibiting companies, said Fira de Barcelona in another statement in which it celebrated becoming the new host of this global event.

The organizer of this show, whose headquarters is in Portland (USA), has justified the future move to Barcelona, arguing that the Catalan capital is a city "with ample fishing tradition, a reference world gastronomic capital for the 'foodie' community and an international maritime logistics center."

Spain, among the main producers

Other reasons that have also motivated the move to Barcelona are the weight of the fisheries sector in the Spanish food industry and the fact that Spain is one of the leading producers, importers and exporters of seafood products worldwide, argues Diversified Communications.

President of Diversified Communications USA, Mary Larkin has assured that Brussels has been an ideal partner for the launch and development of the seafood expo, but that the "necessary evolution" requires moving "to a larger city and enclosure", because it will improve the visitor and business experience.

Diversified has also highlighted the fact that Barcelona is an international destination and one of the main centers of European seafood products.

For his part, the general director of Fira de Barcelona, Constantí Serrallonga said he is very pleased to host "the largest world event on seafood products", and stressed that the site of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, which also hosts the MWC Barcelona, has "the most advanced technical and logistic features".

The fact that Barcelona offers a first class gastronomic experience and that it welcomes some of the world's most awarded chefs has also weighed in the decision to move this event to the Catalan capital. However, in 2020 the last edition of this show will be held in Brussels, to highlight "built relationships" with Brussels and with its local partners throughout these years, the organization said.
