Earlier this spring, FHF announced funding for research on effective methods for the prevention and control of salmon lice and scabies. and knowledge and experience mapping on the use of cleaner fish. The result was five new projects.

Salmon lice are an important factor in the development of the industry. In recent years, the industry has changed its focus from drug control of salmon lice to non-drug prevention and control. It is crucial that the methods involve the least possible or sufficiently gentle handling of the salmon so that proper fish welfare is maintained. Therefore, FHF announced funding earlier this year for theme 1 « Effective methods for prevention and control of salmon lice and scales, including the use of cleaner fish » and theme 2 «knowledge and experience mapping on the use of cleaner fish».
Great range in the knowledge sought
17 applications were received for the call - 14 within theme 1 and 3 within theme 2. The projects are assessed against relevance to the call, business benefit and method choice, among other things. The projects that are now underway and that have received support within theme 1 are Sintef Ocean which will document best practice to improve thermal de-lice, the Veterinary Institute will calculate the effect of various measures against lice by statistical modeling , the University College of Western Norway will study chitinolytic enzymes can be used as a new treatment method against salmon lice and Akvaplan niva will study the effect and welfare of using cleaner fish and lice skirts.
"These projects were chosen after a thorough evaluation, where utility value for the industry is an important criterion, in addition of course to, among other things, research quality. The expectation is that these projects will contribute new knowledge in areas that are central to keeping salmon lice under stable good control ", says Kjell Maroni, head of department at FHF.
The cleaning fish guides will now be updated
Many salmon producers use cleaner fish as part of the overall strategy for the prevention and control of salmon lice. The cleaning fish guides are actively used by industry and management.
INAQ and Akvaplan-niva are now in the process of compiling new knowledge to update the supervisors in the project " Effective and sound use of cleaner fish: A campaign for best practice use of cleaner fish "
"In recent years, there has been increasing attention and discussion about both the effect and ethical aspects of the use of cleaner fish. To bring about an improvement, it is important to apply the latest knowledge and experience to know both what to do and what not to do. We hope this project will give the breeders an important tool", says head of department at FHF Eirik Sigstadstø.
All projects are now underway and have a time frame between 1-3 years.
